Eight year ago while standing in the shower I had a thought:
What if I drive across the country with some camping gear and teach my daughters geography while exploring our country and visiting family?
This thought was not fleeting, it was visceral. It desired acknowledgment and serious consideration. It was what I call an Inspiration Strike. Intuitive by nature, inspiration strikes are roadmaps presented by the inner guidance system within us in answer to some question we have been asking of ourselves.
Inspiration strikes usually happen in the most mundane moments. In spaces where the mind can wander so the voice of inspiration can quietly step in and drop a strike of wonder into our laps for consideration.
My husband, the true believer in my stubborn dedication to an idea once it takes hold, reluctantly agreed to watch his daughters and wife drive off across the country.
In less than a month my trip was planned out, shifted, changed and then confirmed. The universe provided us with an RV a week after my declaration. On June 1st, a day I chose arbitrarily, and less than a month since my inspiration strike, I took to the drivers seat and began my journey.
Inspiration strikes can come in many forms: images, hearing someone talk, dreams, other times like a deja vu. When it arrives we know it’s real because it gets our attention through body reactions, then mental stories that spur the idea along. Some call it daydreaming, other intuitive nudges. I call them inspiration strikes.
Whatever we call it this much is certain: the soul is speaking and it’s telling us it’s time to see more of life.
Here is where I tell you some truths about where I was at when I decided to step into this grand adventure:
I had only driven the RV for 100 miles prior to leaving on a 31 day cross country trip. I had never parked it or driven it up mountains.
I had a basic idea of where I was going but a hurricane made all those plans fly out the window as I skirted floods, winds, and evacuations.
My daughters were 8, their support and love was inspirational not authoritative.
It was me at the wheel all day, every day. I had a direction I desired to drive, but I only made planes as I went—day by day.
This grand adventure was full of challenges, beauty, and life changing lessons. I’m not sure I had ever relied so fully on my inner guidance system as I did on this exploration of my edges of knowing. When I remained in the trust of this inner guidance I was led to exactly where I needed to go, found what I needed to find, met who I needed to meet.
Trust is a foundational aspect of individual exploration. Soul evolution can only progress when we are all in while testing our boundaries, uncovering our potential.
Which leads me to a new understanding: the closer you get to your goals, the more aligned these inspiration strikes hit towards your ultimate goal. When you have broad hopes or dreams then the strikes are varied. When viewed from afar can seem random.
When our intention is “be happy” then the guidance we receive will be broad, providing multiple options to bring us to where we want to go, they just aren’t a direct route to anywhere.
Finding a simple focus is key to up-leveling our inspiration strikes.
You might be asking what the intention behind the cross-country trip was?
I desired a change so fundamental the only way I could mange it was to leave out on my own without my rock steady husband. I needed to explore the depth of my character, heal wounds that were generational, and then return home to see my place in the world through different eyes. But I couldn’t have told you that then.
Sometimes we just have to let the soul revolution happen. We have to trust the truth of what we are asking for is only known in the parts of us that are ready to grow, long before our ego brain catches up.
Your soul already knows what to do.
To get the most out of the wisdom shared by inner guidance, keep records of your inspiration strikes. Follow through when possible. Refine personal goals, once you have them, and keep working. Inspiration strikes will keep showing up because that’s one of the things life is for: experience.
